Interactive Music Education for Northeast Ohio Schools
Authentic polka music, hands-on learning, and real cultural context, brought to your students through assembly programs and workshops built to actually hold their attention.
Music education keeps getting squeezed by budget cuts and shrinking class time. But the research is consistent: musical experiences improve academic performance, social development, and cultural awareness in students (National Association for Music Education).
The Chardon Polka Band brings music education directly to Northeast Ohio schools through interactive assembly programs that engage students and support what teachers are already doing in the classroom.
We serve schools and youth organizations across Geauga, Lake, Cuyahoga, Summit, Portage, and the surrounding counties. Every program puts students in the music, not in the audience. They participate, ask questions, and try things out instead of sitting through another assembly.
Programs work in any space, from a 25-student classroom to a full auditorium. Tell us what you've got and we'll make it work.
Trusted by Schools & Libraries Across Northeast Ohio
The Chardon Polka Band puts on some of the most fantastic children's programs at our library. The kids not only LOVE their programs, but they also LEARN so much about music, rhythm, instruments, movement, and more! They bring SO MUCH energy to their programs that the kids, and even adults, enjoy their work. Book them, they are great!Christina Mihalic Youth Services Manager, Burton Public Library
Our kids really enjoyed your concert. Not only did you play music that the kids enjoyed but they also learned something about your music. I would highly recommend you to any school.Andy Carner Principal, St. Mary's School, Berea, OH
Programs Built for Every Grade Level
Every program puts students at the center. They clap, move, ask questions, and try things out, so they're part of the music instead of just watching it. We tune the pacing, vocabulary, and activities to the age group in the room.
Elementary
Movement, rhythm games, and simple instrument demos. Kids pick up the basics like beat, rhythm, loud, soft, fast, and slow through hands-on play. We meet them at their attention span and keep it moving.
30-40 MinutesUpper Elementary
More detailed instrument demos, cultural history, and group rhythm activities. Students explore how instruments make sound, how musicians work together, and how music connects to other subjects they're already studying.
45 MinutesMiddle School
Older students dig into musical structure, cultural diversity, and the role music plays in building community. We also talk about practice habits, musical careers, and what ensemble performance actually takes.
45 MinutesHigh School
Advanced concepts and cross-curricular connections to social studies, math, and physics. The program can lean into music appreciation, cultural anthropology, or career exploration depending on what fits your curriculum.
45 MinutesWhat Your School Needs to Provide
- Sound Amplification Basic system for gyms and auditoriums. Smaller rooms work acoustically.
- Performance Space Roughly 12 ft by 8 ft of clear floor.
- Electrical Access One standard outlet is plenty.
- Everything Else We bring all the instruments and the rest of our audio gear.
Real Learning, Not Just a Show
Music education supports academic performance, social skills, and cultural understanding across grade levels. Our programs hit multiple learning objectives in one assembly, which is part of why teachers tell us their classes come back more focused than they left.
Academic Performance
Music activities reinforce math through rhythm and pattern recognition, language arts through vocabulary and active listening, and science through sound production and vibration. Teachers often see better focus and classroom behavior after our visits.
Cultural Awareness
Students learn how polka music came to America with European immigrants and how it became part of community life across the Midwest. It's a useful entry point for social studies units on immigration and multicultural education.
Social-Emotional Learning
Group participation teaches cooperation, active listening, and shared problem-solving. Kids work together to make music, which builds classroom community, empathy, and confidence in group settings.
Physical Development
Clapping, marching, and simple dance steps build gross motor skills and coordination. Students reinforce musical concepts while moving, which keeps energy up and supports body awareness.
Creative Expression
Students try rhythm activities and musical participation, and some discover an interest or talent they didn't know they had. We've seen kids leave assemblies asking their teachers about band class, which is what this is all for.
What a Visit Looks Like
Each program follows a structure that balances education with entertainment. The kids stay engaged from start to finish, and they walk away with real musical and cultural information.
-
Opening and Introduction
We meet the band, introduce the instruments, and set up the cultural context for what's coming. It builds rapport and excitement for the rest of the program.
-
Instrument Demonstrations
Live demos of accordion, clarinet, trumpet, tuba, and drums. Students see how each one makes sound and what role it plays in the ensemble.
-
Interactive Participation
Clapping exercises, rhythm games, and movement activities that pull every student into the music. No prior experience needed.
-
Cultural Education
Students learn how polka took root in America, what immigration has to do with it, and how musical traditions get passed down and stay alive.
-
Closing and Inspiration
We wrap up by encouraging students to explore their own musical interests and pointing them toward music programs in their school and community.
Beyond the School Assembly
School assemblies are our main focus, but the same educational approach travels well to other settings around Northeast Ohio.
Public Libraries
We partner with libraries across the region for programs that combine learning with family fun. They work well for summer reading kickoffs, cultural programming, and mixed-age audiences where parents and kids participate together.
Community Centers
Recreation programs and community centers often want educational programming that brings families together. We adapt to the facility and the audience, with content that supports intergenerational participation and cultural appreciation.
Summer Camps & After-School
Camps and after-school programs benefit from longer formats with more hands-on time. Kids get repeat sessions with the instruments, deeper musical exploration, and more space to ask questions.
Special Events
Birthday parties, cultural celebrations, and community festivals all work. We customize the program to fit the event while keeping the educational substance intact.
How to Book a Program
Scheduling starts with a quick conversation about your students, your goals, and your logistics. We work directly with educators and administrators to make sure the program fits your calendar and your space.
Where We Travel
All of Northeast Ohio, including Cleveland, Akron, Canton, and Youngstown, plus rural and suburban districts throughout Geauga, Lake, Cuyahoga, Summit, Portage, and surrounding counties. We can often schedule multiple programs in one day, which keeps costs down if you coordinate with neighboring districts or run multiple sessions across grade levels.
How Far Ahead to Book
Aim for 4 to 6 weeks in advance. Peak seasons (October through December, March through May) book up faster, so earlier is better. Tighter timelines sometimes work if you're flexible on dates.
Custom Programs
We can tilt the program toward whatever you're already teaching. Immigration unit? Music theory? Cross-curricular project on community building? Tell us what you need and we'll shape the assembly to support it.
Common Questions
How far do you travel?
We serve all of Northeast Ohio, generally within about 75 miles of our home base. That covers Cleveland, Akron, Canton, Youngstown, and the surrounding counties. Outside that range, just ask, we can often work something out.
What equipment does the school need to provide?
Just basic sound amplification for larger venues like gyms or auditoriums, a standard electrical outlet, and a performance space of about 12 by 8 feet. We bring all the instruments and the rest of our audio gear. For smaller venues, we can perform acoustically.
How long are programs?
Elementary programs run 30 to 40 minutes. Middle and high school programs typically run 45 minutes to allow for deeper discussion. We can flex the length a bit to fit your bell schedule.
What age groups do you serve?
Kindergarten through 12th grade, with content adapted for each level. We also program for mixed-age audiences in libraries, community settings, and family events.
How much advance notice do you need?
4 to 6 weeks is ideal. Fall and spring book up first, so book earlier if you can. Shorter notice sometimes works depending on our schedule.
Do you offer virtual programming?
Our programs are built for in-person interaction, but we can talk through virtual options if you need them. The format adapts, though the hands-on energy is harder to replicate on a screen.
What curriculum standards do your programs support?
We align with Ohio Learning Standards for music, social studies, and physical education. Teachers use our programs to reinforce lessons on music appreciation, cultural awareness, rhythm and movement, immigration history, and cross-curricular connections.
Can the program be customized?
Yes. If you're running a unit on immigration, cultural diversity, music theory, or anything else where polka music can support what you're teaching, tell us and we'll build the program to match.
